My Ipod freezes sometimes and my songs disappear and reappear. What gives?

When it freezes, I reset it and it comes back fine, but often my entire library of songs disappears. After I reset a couple of times, all of the songs reappear. What is going on? This is a 3 yr old, 30 GB Ipod.
