Excluding the thumb, why are our fingers all different lengths?

I can see no obvious reason why the fingers could not be exactly the same length, this pattern seems to be repeated throughout nature as well, with dogs and cats notable exceptions, but if you look at lizards, alligators, camels etc etc, they all have digits of differing length.......Why?
